The author of this book, Hugh Bicheno, is a British-American military historian (he was born in Cuba to British parents, is a naturalised citizen of the United States, and today lives in Cambridge, England). He is fluent in English and Spanish, and most importantly (as far as this book is concerned) was working for intelligence in the British embassy in Buenos Aires during the period when the military ruled Argentina.
The most unique thing about this book is that it attempts tells the story of the war from both sides' perspectives. That is not to say that it is uncritical: Bicheno is unfraid of strongly stating his opinions. In particular, the actions of the Argentine military dictatorship is very strongly critized in the book, but additionally, Bicheno points out what he says as many British diplomatic mistakes and weaknesses in the long-running dispute with Argentina.
To me, one rather unusual aspect of the book, is it goes right from the "big picture" view of the war, from there to the specifics of the campaign, and finally into very detailed accounts of individual battles.
As a side note, I did notice that there was a minor controversy when the book was reviewed in the Guardian. Robert Fox (who himself reported on the Falklands War for the BBC), wrote a somewhat critical review in the Guardian (April 1st 2006), to which Hugh Bicheno subsequently responded (April 12th 2006). I do not wish to comment on their debate (you can read it for yourself through the links provided if you want to), but I will say that I enjoyed reading this book, and thought it a worthwhile addition to my personal library of books about the Falklands conflict.
